I hadn’t heard of Poulan before as a brand name, but it seemed like the best choice when I was looking around for a gas-powered string trimmer.  I had had enough of corded trimmers and snagging and cutting the cord when I was using them.  I find that the battery ones work well for a few days but then they start to deteriorate and eventually I’m having to charge them back up every 5 minutes.  I was slightly skeptical about the gas ones being heavy, or even dangerous to use but I have heard some pretty good things about them, so when I was the Poulan Pro PPWT60022 in my local garden hardware store, I decided to give it a try.

When I got the Poulan Pro PPWT60022 home and unpacked it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Poulan had supplied the oil that I needed to get the Poulan Pro PPWT60022 going.  I had some spare fuel lying around, but I had completely overlooked the fact that I might actually need oil to put in the trimmer.  One thing that makes this trimmer different from the others is that it requires absolutely no assembly.  As long as you’ve put the gasoline and oil in the trimmer, it’s good to go.  That was quite good news for me as there was a storm on the way, and I just wanted to get the trimmer in action.

The Poulan Pro PPWT60022 only has a small tank for gas.  I like this fact because first of all, it means that I can actually comfortably use this trimmer without it feeling too heavy due to its gas tank capacity.  The other advantage that I have found with the small tank is that after my day’s work, the fuel has pretty much been completely used up in the tank.  That’s good for health and safety.  Just in case my kids get into my tool shed and decide to help trim the garden, there is no fuel left in the tank, which puts my mind at ease.  In addition to that, I have noticed that the trimmer starts well if there is new fuel in the tank.  I guess that makes sense because fuel sitting in the tank over time can cause a clog in the system.

The Poulan Pro PPWT60022 is really light anyway, even with the small tank size. I don’t think there are many people who would struggle with it.  The trimming string on the device is one of the best designs I’ve ever had.  I had gotten frustrated with other trimmers in the past where the string ends up wrapping itself around some plant.
I would make the recommendation for the Poulan Pro PPWT60022 as a great alternative to the corded and battery trimmers out there.

When my previous string trimmer decided to give up, I chose to replace it with a corded model. I looked at all of the ones that were within my budget and this one just stood out for me.

I like the design of the trimmer. It is easy to grip and it’s not too short so that I don’t need to stoop when using it. I’ve found in the past that shorter trimmers can leave me with a painful back for a few days, either because of the weight of them, or because of the height of the trimmer.

When I first got the trimmer, I had to fit a trimmer guard over the rotary part of the trimmer.  This is supposed to be a safety precaution and I wouldn’t recommend that you use the trimmer without it, but it took me over an hour to get it fitted properly because for some reason it just didn’t seem to want to fit in place.  Once you have attached that part, its probably best that you don’t bother trying to remove it, or you’ll just have the same struggle again to get it on.  It’s metal so I very much doubt that it will ever bend into a better shape to fit on more easily.

As well as the little trimmer guard is a separate and larger guard, which prevents trimmings from flying up and about everywhere.  You should definitely use that, as you don’t want to chip all the cuttings straight in your face.

You should be careful with the string coil on this trimmer.  Whilst other trimmers that I’ve owned have been quite good ant maintaining a good string length, the string on the Weed Eater RTE115C always ends up being really long.  The main problem I can see with that is the fact that when it is that long, you run the risk of over trimming, and even slicing through your own leg.  That’s not the best scenario in the world, so if you do have this trimmer, you should exercise special caution about the string and check that it is not a dangerous length.  At first you may find this a little frustrating, as dealing with the string feed mechanism is quite hard to get the hang of initially but once you have used the trimmer a few times, its benefits will ease the frustration about the string.  You could always try some thicker gauge string from the local hardware store.  That often works for mine.

The trimmer itself is powerful and it is enough to get through the thicker stalks and plants.  It also doubles up as a handy edger and it made my path look beautiful and defined in about 10 minutes.  I would certainly recommend it as a useful corded trimmer.

I am a gardening contractor so for my work, I need a string trimmer that will provide me with the power that I need to carry out my work, as well as lasting long enough to complete large jobs at a time.  I invested in the Husqvarna 323L 24.5cc E-Tech 2-Cycle Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer With Smart Start because I have owned Husqvarna products before, and have always been impressed with their quality and craftsmanship.  The 323L is no exception.  It is very well made, and is targeted at both homeowners as well as those who make a living through gardening as I do.

There is a massive advantage to using a petrol trimmer, especially for the mobile contractor.  If I used a corded trimmer, I wouldn’t get very far at all!  I would need to borrow other people’s electricity connections, which can look incredibly unprofessional to clients.  There is also the risk of running the trimmer over the cord and slicing through it, rendering the trimmer useless.  Alternatively, I could have chosen a battery-powered trimmer but again I’m a bit stuck when it comes to the battery power.  Rarely does the power ever reach the strength that you need for the larger jobs, and if you are trimming a larger area, then you end up running out of battery power quickly.  Again, there’s the problem of where to plug in the charging unit for the trimmer.  Of course, I could carry around multiple charged batteries, but this is a very expensive workaround for the problem.  By using a gas-powered trimmer, I can access fuel from any filling station.  The oil can be purchased in most auto and DIY shops and of course, it is easy to carry around spare cans of fuel.  I can top up the trimmer whenever I need to and I don’t need to worry about running low on power because with the gas-powered trimmer when the gas runs out, the motor simply stops working.  The only warning that you will get when the Husqvarna 323L 24.5cc E-Tech 2-Cycle Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer With Smart Start begins to run out of fuel is that it will make a choking action and eventually will just stop working until you refill it again.

There is no assembly required with the 323L and you can be using it almost straight away.  It is lightweight and I have no trouble in using it to complete large lawn work.  The noise output on the Husqvarna 323L is very low so you won’t experience the ringing in your ears that you normally would with the cheaper models of a trimmer, and you will notice that there is hardly any vibration that passes through your hands when you are using it.

I have had the Poulan Pro 17-Inch 25cc Gas Powered String Trimmer for about 4 weeks now.  I purchased it just as my old trimmer had decided to stop trimming so well, and after I had gotten annoyed with the design of the previous trimmer.  Some trimmers have a curved shaft between the handle and the actual trimmer.  There are two main problems that I have with this.  Firstly the curve means that it is almost impossible to comfortably store the trimmer without wasting space, and secondly the design means that it is really inefficient to trim with because the weight of the trimmer is not balanced and I end up with painful, tired muscles at the end of my trimming.  The Poulan Pro 17-Inch 25cc Gas Powered String Trimmer however does not suffer from this problem.  It has a completely straight shaft design, which I prefer, as it is easier to handle and doesn’t have the same tilt that other trimmers seem to suffer from.

The Poulan Pro 17-Inch 25cc Gas Powered String Trimmer does come with a few optional extras by way of attachments.  Of course it is completely up to you whether or not you wish to use them, or just peep the trimmer as a standard trimmer, but if you do want to make full use of the additional features, the parts are really simple to fit and remove.  I have spent many hours setting up other trimmers that have offered additional features, but the parts on this just snap into place.

The Poulan Pro 17-Inch 25cc Gas Powered String Trimmer is reasonably easy to use, and I would say it is safe too.  There is a simple trigger method of starting it, and as soon as you stop pulling on the trigger, the string stops spinning.

Because the Poulan Pro 17-Inch 25cc Gas Powered String Trimmer is gas powered, there is none of the usual problems that you would experience with the corded or battery powered trimmers.  The tank can be filled with as much or as little gas as you like, and if you do run out of fuel, you just pour some more in – there’s no need to wait to use the trimmer again like you do when you are using a battery powered trimmer.  Having a gas tank doesn’t even mean that the trimmer is heavy.  In fact, because you are not carrying around a big heavy battery, you will find that this is lighter than other cordless trimmers that you may have used if you have never tried a gas trimmer.

I recommend this trimmer if you are looking for a gas-powered alternative to your usual corded or battery powered cordless string trimmer.

I am not normally a fan of using electrical appliances and have always been happy to use the manual tools, but since I moved into a larger home, with a larger garden, I have found that I need to spend far more hours keeping my garden tidy.  My neighbor uses a corded string trimmer to keep their weeds cut back, and after having a go with their trimmer, I decided that I would try one of my own.

The best price that I could find in my local DIY store was for the Toro 51346 15-Inch 4.4 amps Electric Trimmer and the assistant in the store told me that it is a popular model that sells well without anyone coming back with any faults.  As there is a decent warranty with this trimmer, I decided to choose this one.

When I took the trimmer out of its box for the first time, I noticed that there was a little assembly required.  That did not faze me, and I found it quite easy to assemble.  The trimmer works by holding onto a handle and squeezing a trigger to power it.  I was amazed that a trimming job that would have taken me most of the day only took me just under an hour to do.  I was also able to use the trimmer to do the edges of my pathway too.  I had to get a little help from my neighbor when I was first learning how to use it, but I soon got the hang of it.  I found that it was a little heavy to use, and the shaft of the trimmer vibrates, which travels up to the handle and ends up making you feel even more tired.  I still found it less tiring though, than having to do an entire day’s worth of weeding!  I struggled to replace the string spool when that ran out.  It requires a screwdriver and brute force to get it both out and then back in again.

The main drawback of the trimmer is the fact that it is corded.  I have never used a cordless one before and I imagine that they would not be as powerful as a corded trimmer, and that it would probably run out of power, but with the cord on the Toro 51346 15-Inch 4.4 amp Electric Trimmer, I have to use an extension lead to be able to trim the very back of my garden.  I don’t think this would be such a great buy for those who have huge areas of land, as it would require a long extension that would be impractical.  For the smaller gardens in domestic properties however, it is a robust trimmer that does the job.

The Husqvarna 128DJx was at the higher end of my budget when I was looking around for a new gas powered trimmer, but with all its additional features, I felt that it would be a food investment.  I have owned a different model of Husqvarna trimmer in the past.  I trust this company to deliver professional standards of DIY power tools and I know that tools that I have previously bought from them have been the best in quality.

The Husqvarna 128DJx features the usual string trimmer that you would expect.  It has a good robust design that is easy to handle, and simple to use.  Not only this though, but the Husqvarna 128DJx allows you to also cut your grass as you would with a normal lawn mower.  I like this feature because I have fairly uneven land in my garden, and so using a lawnmower isn’t ideal.  The Husqvarna 128DJx 17-Inch 28cc 2-Stroke Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer/Brush Cutter with Detachable Shaft just glides over grass and cuts smoothly, rather than simply tearing it out by the root like some trimmers would do.
Storing the Husqvarna is really simple because the shaft is easy to remove.  I am able to fit it into a small corner of my shed and it is not in the way.

When you use most of the trimmers you will find that even if they are not heavy, the rotation of the motor will cause the trimmer to vibrate in your hands.  This can make your grip unsteady and even numb the sensation in your fingers, which can cause you to drop the trimmer.  That is very dangerous, especially if you lose control of the trimmer whilst you are squeezing the trigger to power it.  It only takes a second to do some very harmful damage.  The Husqvarna 128DJx doesn’t have this safety issue, as the rotary motor is far more efficient and it ensures that the impact of the motor rotating is used to power the trimmer, rather than just being absorbed back into the trimmer handle.

I like that the Husqvarna 128DJx is powered by gas because it means that I can use the trimmer whenever I want, and wherever in my garden that I choose to.  I don’t have to worry about where the cord is, or whether my battery has been charged ready for use.

With the additional features that make this trimmer so much more useful than the other trimmers in its price range, and with the additional safety features, I think it is a great choice if you are able to afford it.  The trimmer is easy to assemble, use and is powerful enough for any job.
